Hypnosis Denver – Smoking and Hair loss
Not only can cigarette smoking leave the hair with a persistent odor of smoke, it has also been proven to cause potential hair loss over the long term.
Smokers may notice that the top layers of their hair are quite brittle. This causes them to break off before they are fully grown and is most likely because they are malnourished.
Gay Sutherland, director of the Maudsley Hospital Smokers Clinic in London, says, “Cigarettes contain 4,000 different chemicals and gases, some of them deadly. When you smoke, your blood carries around poisonous carbon monoxide gas which hijacks the red blood cells.
“This prevents the cells from carrying the right amounts of oxygen around your body. Ultimately, this will affect things like your hair as it is not being supplied with enough nutrients or fresh oxygen from the bloodstream.”
A recent observational study found that cigarette smoking may not only cause hair loss, it can accelerate baldness, especially if it is genetic. Cigarette smoking can leave hair lank and more prone to breakage.

Hypnosis Denver – How does cigarette smoking lead to hair loss?
A study published in the Archives of Dermatology sought to find out the impact of smoking upon hair loss in a survey of Taiwanese men (Su, L.H. and Chen, T.H., 2007). The test concluded that there was a significant, positive association between moderate or severe Androgenic Alopecia (male pattern baldness) and smoking 20 cigarettes or more per day.
The association of hair loss and smoking was largely attributed to toxins in smoke that can harm hair follicles and damage hormones. According to epidemiological studies, that appears to be the case. A report in the journal BMJ looked at more than 600 men and women, half of them smokers. After controlling for variables, the researchers found a ”significant” and ”consistent” link between smoking and early graying.
Hypnosis Denver – Premature greying
Though premature greying of hair is mainly a hereditary problem, cosmetologist Dr Jamuna Pai says, “Smoking can aggravate this problem. Nicotine causes blood vessel to constrict, which in turn makes it harder to pump blood through the arteries. Smoking also produces carbon monoxide, which inhibits the blood’s capacity to carry oxygen and remove toxins.” Both these factors prevent the oxygenation of hair tissue and the effective removal of free radicals from the body, thus aggravating the problem.
Carbon monoxide in smoke decreases the oxygen carrying capacity of the blood. These factors may contribute to poor wound healing after a hair transplant and can increase the chance of a wound infection and scarring. Smoking may also contribute to poor hair growth of transplanted hair. “Smoking also prevents the removal of ‘free radicals’ or toxins from the body. This free radicals build up causes many cosmetic changes and disease, one of them being hair fall, as a lot more of the hair shift into ‘falling’ phase,” says Dr Pai.
Hair expert Dr Ritu Khedekar says, “Irrespective of the sex, it’s young people who mostly suffer from hair loss and greying due to smoking. This is the period where there is lots of stress at work and smoking just adds to it. Due to these reasons, the number of patients suffering from this problem is quickly increasing.”

Listed below are the reasons to stop smoking to help your hair:
1. Your hair will always have a persistent odor of smokiness which can also be transferred to your clothing and bedsheets.
2. Smoking will accelerate the aging of your hair by causing chronic dryness and oil imbalance. The top layers of your hair may become chronically brittle.
3. It has been documented that smoke will flow through the pores of your scalp potentially clogging it with tar and resin residues which can start hair roots.
