Children who live in homes where parents or others smoke have a higher risk of developing middle ear infections than kids whose houses are smoke-free, a new study shows.

Researchers at the Harvard School of Public Health and the Research Institute for a Tobacco Free Society in the Republic of Ireland say they found that a reduction in secondhand smoke in American homes was associated with fewer cases of otitis media, or what most people refer to as middle ear infections.

Hypnosis Denver – Risks of Secondhand Smoke

The U.S. Surgeon General in 2006 said enough evidence existed to suggest a connection between parents and others smoking and ear infections in children.

293,000 cases of frequent ear infections in the U.S., out of about 4.5 million annually, are attributed to secondhand smoke from the home, as reported in the Archives of Pediatrics & Adolescent Medicine.

Hypnosis Denver – How Smoking Increases The Chance Of Ear Infections

Exposure to secondhand smoke increases both the number of ear infections a child will experience, and the duration of the illness. Inhaled smoke irritates the Eustachian tube, which connects the back of the nose with the middle ear. This causes swelling and obstruction which interferes with pressure equalization in the middle ear, leading to pain, fluid and infection.

Cigarette smoke is irritating to the nasal passage. In response to this irritate, as with any irritate, the nose builds up its defense (mucus). This “defense” against the cigarette smoke is what carries the bacteria or virus into your child’s middle ear canal.

Studies have shown that the presence of cigarette, or any tobacco, smoke can increase the chance of getting an ear infection by 48% in children and up to 80% in infants.

Another way cigarette smoke affects your child’s risk of getting ear infections is by suppressing their immune system.

It has long been shown that cigarette smoke decreases the effectiveness of the immune system and it is generally accepted that secondhand smoke has the same effect on those around it. Therefore prolonged or repeated exposure to cigarette smoke can make it harder for your child’s body to fight off an infection.

Hypnosis Denver – The good news

Hypnosis Denver

Researchers of a new study used data from the National Cancer Institute and found that non-smoking rules in households nearly doubled from 45% in 1993 to 86% in 2006. This increase in smoke-free homes, the researchers say, most likely was the result of increased awareness of dangers of secondhand smoke.

In this same time period, outpatient visits by children with otitis media to doctors’ offices or clinics decreased 4.6%; hospitalizations decreased by 9.8%.

Hypnosis Denver – Earache Wives Tale

In addition, to the old wives tale “blowing smoke in your child’s ear to cure an earache” does not work do to the fact that the 4000 chemicals in the cigarette are toxins and they cause inflammation. You are trying to reduce the inflammation in the ear not increase the inflammation.
